Habs' Domi sucker punches Ekblad

MONTREAL (AP) Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo said Max Domi's sucker punch on Aaron Ekblad was "gutless."

Domi was given a match penalty for punching Ekblad in the nose in the third period in the Panthers' 5-2 exhibition victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Ekblad left the game, at the NHL's request, and did not return. He went through tests after the game and cleared concussion protocol.

Sabres sign Reinhart for 2 years, $7.3M

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Sabres can finally prepare for the start of the season with their full complement of forwards after signing Sam Reinhart to a two-year, $7.3 million contract on Wednesday.

Reinhart was a restricted free agent, and the team's lone offseason holdout before reaching the deal after missing the first five days of training camp and two preseason games.

Karlsson gets started with Sharks

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Erik Karlsson was handed a teal San Jose Sharks sweater and immediately proclaimed: "It fits."

Karlsson's first day with the Sharks went off without a hitch Wednesday. He paired up with Marc-Edouard Vlasic on defense in practice, took part in 3-on-3 drills with fellow Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns and began a new chapter in his career after nine seasons as the face of the Ottawa Senators.

DeBrusk leads Bruins by Flames in China

Jake DeBrusk scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday in Beijing, China.

Boston swept the O.R.G. NHL China Games. The Bruins won the exhibition season opener 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday in Shenzhen, China.

Sabres' Sheary may miss start of season

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Buffalo Sabres forward Conor Sheary is in jeopardy of missing the start of the regular season with what the team calls an upper body injury.

Coach Phil Housley didn't go into much detail Tuesday, saying Sheary was injured while being checked during the first day of training camp on Friday. Sheary is listed week to week.

Lundqvist excited for Rangers' rebuild

Henrik Lundqvist is entering his 14th season in the NHL, having spent his entire career with the New York Rangers. And although the team is in a rebuilding mode for a future run at their first Stanley Cup title since 1994, the 36-year-old goalie wants to stick around and be a part of that process.

"People talk about rebuild and nobody knows how long of a project that is," Lundqvist said at the Rangers' practice facility in Greenburgh, New York. "There's no other place I want to be. I feel great, excited to be back here and just see how far we can take this forward this year."

NHL 1 year away from key labor deadline

Connor McDavid heard teammates talking about another potential lockout when he entered the NHL - in 2015.

As he became one of hockey's best players and signed the richest annual contract in the league, McDavid says he remains optimistic there will not be another work stoppages like those in 2004-05 and 2012-13 - but he protected himself anyway with contract language guaranteeing some early payment, just in case.
