Duchene scores 2 against Avs as Sens win

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Matt Duchene's first game as a father couldn't have gone much better.

He even got to celebrate among old friends.

Duchene had two goals and an assist against his former club, and the Ottawa Senators beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Habs' Byron banned 3 games for charging

NEW YORK (AP) Montreal Canadiens forward Paul Byron was suspended for three games without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for charging Florida Panthers defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

Byron was assessed a minor penalty for charging in the second period of Montreal's 5-1 home victory Tuesday night. The suspension will cost Byron $18,817.

Role has Sabres' Beaulieu open to trade

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Sabres defenseman Nathan Beaulieu is concerned with his lack of playing time and would prefer being traded if his role doesn't change in Buffalo, the player's agent told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Kent Hughes said that while he didn't demand the Sabres trade his client, he did request they consider it if Beaulieu isn't considered part of their future plans with his contract set to expire.

NHL, NHLPA abandon hope of World Cup

The NHL and NHL Players' Association have given up on the possibility of staging the next World Cup of Hockey in September 2020 but will continue collective bargaining talks.

The league and PA announced the conclusion in separate statements Wednesday that there's not enough time to put together a World Cup in roughly 20 months. The sides met earlier in the day in Toronto to discuss the World Cup as part of collective bargaining talks after holding an informal meeting in Las Vegas on Jan. 10 that lasted more than two hours.

First, Niemi made a career-high 52 stops as the Canadiens extended their win streak to three games with a 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Arvidsson scores 3 as Preds rout Caps

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Viktor Arvidsson is feeling healthier with each passing game, and the results are showing in the back of the net.

Arvidsson scored a hat trick on National Hat Day, and the Nashville Predators routed the Washington Capitals 7-2 Tuesday night to snap a two-game skid.

Brossoit stops 26 in 2nd, Jets top Vegas

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Laurent Brossoit faced a barrage of pucks against Vegas, and liked it.

Brossoit, Winnipeg's backup goalie, stopped a franchise-record 26 shots in the second period and made a season-high 43 saves in Jets' 4-1 victory over the Golden Knights on Tuesday.
